Bridging the gap between academic and athletic scholarships

In Top Young Artist, 11th and 12th grade students from accredited schools in McLennan County are invited to enter artwork into an exhibition and compete for scholarships.

Top Young Artist Founder Lance Magid adjusts a student artwork on the wall of Studio Gallery.

Founded in 2007 by Lance Magid of Studio Gallery, the goal of the competition is to support students making artwork by offering a venue for the work to be exhibited and awarding scholarships. The competition is judged by experienced local arts figures. Scholarships are paid directly to any post-secondary school of the students’ choice, in any major, up to 4 years after they are originally awarded.

All entries (3 per art teacher or school) are exhibited at Studio Gallery Waco for 2 weeks, where the public can vote on their favorite work for which the winner will receive the $1000 People’s Choice Award. All awards are presented at the opening reception of an exhibition at The Art Center Waco.

Accepted media include drawings (ink or pencil), oil/acrylic paintings, watercolor/ink wash paintings, digital composition, 2-dimensional mixed media works, and photography.
